(A wannabe & devotee story) Jade held out her cane for her mother to take and reached out to grab her father’s arm. “How do I look?” She asked again, finding it impossible to soothe her anxieties without the ability to actually check for herself. “You look beautiful honey,” Her mother assured her. Her mother took the cane gently from Jade’s hand, before taking it and guiding it up to her cheek. Jade’s mother’s face was warm and soft, with thinning skin on cheekbones Jade had known the shape of all her life. Even when she was a young child, before she’d been able to understand the shape of her desires, she’d known how important it was to close her eyes and get to know the shape of those closest to her with her hands. The tips of Jade’s fingers were suddenly wet. “Oh mom,” Jade sighed helplessly as her mother began to cry. “You’re just so beautiful,” Her mother wept, cradling their hands together against her face. Her mother’s crinkly bolero jacket meant that Jade wasn’t surprised
(A wannabe story) “Jay, would you look at that? Have you ever seen anything more amazing?” Ravi couldn’t tear his eyes away, but he heard his boyfriend approaching, his hiking boots thumping in the rocky dirt. When Jayden reached his side he slipped his hand into Ravi’s and rested his head on Ravi’s shoulder. The mountains stretched out in front of them for miles in every direction, lush green slopes with silver and copper peaks that reached into the low clouds. And nestled against Ravi’s neck, the most amazing man he’d ever met. Ravi was a lucky man, that was for sure. And this gap year had been his greatest idea yet, since he got up the courage to ask Jayden out in freshman year. When Jayden stayed quiet, Ravi shifted to look down at his boyfriend. “What the hell Jay, I said look, not shut your eyes.” Jayden smiled, but didn’t open his eyes. “I don’t need my eyes to know how beautiful this place is,” he said. “The air is crisp, and I can smell all the trees and the flowers.
